Butoh is an avant-garde Japanese dance that appeared in the late 50s, in which the emphasis is not on movements, but on the body as such. The origins of Ono Kazuo, Kasai Akira, and especially Hijikata Tatsumi, are among the artists who created the Ankoku Butoh group. The style was influenced by Noh and Kabuki poses, pre-war German expressionism, European surrealism and American avant-gardism, returning again and again to artistic “happings” and “events”.
